LETTER FROM Alfonso

Alfonso

My name is Alfonso and I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to know your country and culture. I live in a medium town in the outskirts of a big city. We live in a residential area in a condominium with a big garden, swimming pool and padel tennis (a kind of tennis with walls).

I assist to a bilingual school since I was 2 years old. It is a big school, with more than 2000 students and it is 10 minutes driving from my house. My school is ruled by priests who have instilled me Catholicism since childhood. In my grade we are 80 students placed in 4 different classes. My favourite subjects are Physical Education and Technology and I also like Economy and Geography and I’m quite good at Biology. I start school at 9 a.m. and finish it at 5 p.m. I have to wake up at 8 because I have to go in public bus. When I come back I do my homework and when I finish, I have free time to watch TV, play video games or anything else. Twice a week I do my homework at 8 cause I have soccer training.

In a normal day in my life, I wake up at 7:30 am, get prepared and take the bus to school. I attend to classes from 9 to 5 with two breaks, one of half an hour and another one of one hour and a half to have lunch. We used to play soccer in these breaks. When I finish school I go back home and arrive at 6 pm or I train with my soccer team and arrive home at 7:30 pm. Then I do my homework and study. After that I have dinner and a shower. If I have time, I watch TV or play some videogames. I try not to get to bed too late because if not I am very tired in the morning.

In my free time, I like to spend it playing any sport and meeting out with my friends. On weekends, I go out with friends of my school and from other schools. We go to the cinema, to the city center, shopping, to a soccer match or just to a fast food restaurant.

My favourite hobby is soccer, I love it, playing it, watching it , reading about it…everything related to soccer I like it. I play soccer since I was 5 years old and I train twice a week. I compete in a Regional League on Saturdays. In addition to soccer I also play tennis or paddle sometimes and in winter, I ski with my family and friends two or three times in the Pyrenees mountains. I am very keen on athletics, I always have been selected in my school to compete in the regional competitions. I really like any kind of sport and I follow here in Spain your NBA and NFL leagues. I am willing to learn and know more about them and baseball or any other new sport for me.

My interest about going to USA has a beginning. It all started when I went to summer camps outside home. I learned how to be independent, how to solve problems in life without my parents. They sent me to Ireland to a summer language camp living with an Irish Family and, at the beginning, I was scared because I was only 10 years old, but in the first days of the camp I made lots of friends that helped me to have a better experience. After 4 summers going to Ireland, I decided it was time to go further, to spend more than only a month away. I tried to go to USA 2 years ago but I could not go because I was not old enough. I talked to some older friends that have been in the USA and after all the experiences and good stories they shared with me, I was completely sure where I wanted to go.

I have been learning English for 12 years in school but as I already mentioned, I have been to Ireland 1 month for the last 4 summers where I stayed in an Irish family and went to school. There, I learned how to live together with foreign families and learning their culture and traditions. In school I also learned one year of German and now I am in my second year of French. I´m not very fluent on them but I am improving it little by little.

I am the youngest of 2 kids. My older sister will start college next year. She is still deciding what to do. My parents were born in a sea city in the south of Spain, where they both lived with their families before getting married and where we go every holidays.

We now have a new member of the family a dog, an American beagle. It looks like a puppy but he is 2 years old. I like to play with him and walk him around the neighborhood. I like all kind of pets except for the insects and the reptiles. Whenever I see a dog, I try to play with him.

In holidays, we always go to my parent’s town in the south of Spain. My two grandmothers and most of my cousins live there. I spend half of the holidays in each grandmother´s house. I spend most of the day on the beach, sometimes sailing, with any of my cousins playing football, tennis or just swimming. This town is one of the most popular holiday place in Spain for local families. Lots of people from all around the country go there on summer, so I have lots of friends there. We also have been to Dubai, London, Lisbon, Paris and New York, not in Summer but in others holidays breaks.

At home, dinner is prepared by my parents, they are both amazing cooks and prepare me some of my favorite dishes. These ones are pasta, steaks, fried eggs… I am not a great cook. If my parents are not at home, my sister and I try to prepare whatever. She is quite a great cook, she makes great cakes.

About my parents, they are the best, they are always taking care of me and they completely trust on me. My mother works as a secretary in a brand consultancy company. She has been involved in the launch of really well known brands here in Spain. She rarely gets angry. My father is Marketing and Franchise Director in a restaurant company. His company owns some restaurants like Burger King or Dominos Pizza. Sometimes we go there to eat and he test new dishes with us and our friends. We also get discount in his company restaurants and all my friends would like that their parents worked in that. I try to be the best as possible at home, if I have any problem I always tell them. I trust a lot on them.

One of my favorite moments of the year is Christmas. I spend it on my grandmothers’ houses with all my cousins. We celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas day with one family and we give us Father Christmas presents and have dinner all together. And the other important day is New Year’s Eve that we go to my paternal grandmother house. All my cousins and uncles go there and we are more than 30 people having dinner all together. We eat a grape for each bell ring when the clock strikes 12 at the turn of the year. This is a common tradition of my country. We also throw fireworks in the garden. It is the only day the whole family is reunited.

I would like to learn a lot at school, I will try the hardest to get the best grades and to improve my English. I will also want to learn about US History and Government and also about your native sports. I have always wondered how an American High School is. They told is much better than schools here, better facilities, more entertaining classes, more projects and less theory… I would like to try to join the sports team like soccer or American football. I will do my best at school.

I am a very responsible and organized person, I have always my bedroom tidied up. I make my bed, and I help at home if it is needed. I like to talk a lot with people from other countries and learn about their culture. Talk about their traditions, their country, the sports they like, their politic and lots of more things.

About food, I´m not very keen on vegetables but on fruit. I like meat, fish, pasta… I follow a healthy nutrition apart from not eating lots of vegetables.

Regarding my physical aspect, I´m 5´8″ feet tall and weigh 132 pounds so I am quite a slim guy. I am dark haired, brown eyes, straight hair and I have some freckles.

Finally I appreciate my future host family for giving me the opportunity to live one year with them and their culture and I will be happy to learn more about your country and show you some things about mine.
