LETTER FROM Miguel

Miguel

Dear future Host Family,

My name is Miguel. I am almost sixteen years old boy and I was born in Madrid, Spain. Here is where I live and where I grew up. Although I’m the only son of my parents, I grew up surrounded by a large family, with my grandparents, my uncles and my cousins. We see each other very often, and we try to celebrate most festivities all together. In these kinds of family celebrations we often dance and listen to music. I have become the family’s most popular DJ. Lately I’ve been adapting my playlist to the taste of everybody, even my parents.

I love music, not only listening, also playing. Music has been my first connection with American culture, particularly Hip Hop and Latin music. I play percussion, Latin and also flamenco. I would love to share Spanish music with anybody willing to listen.

I love traveling. I’ve been to Paris, Venice, London and twice in Africa. Traveling with my family I’ve realized how important it is to speak as many languages as you possibly can.

My father and I had been traveling through the north of Africa in a Jeep with a tent and food for the way, it was such a great experience. I met a lot of people from the desert that lived like nomads. That’s why I would like to cross the pacific ocean and land in such a great country as the U.S.

Since I have no biological brothers, sharing is very important for me. I’ve seen in movies how Americans coming from different ethnicites come together as a team. I would like to meet people that could be like brothers to me.

My mother is a very cheerful person, she loves to organize parties where we cook paellas or barbecues in the country where my grandparents lives. She works in the fashion business. She is used to organizing people for work but also to throw great parties. She encouraged me to go to the U.S to learn English properly. I know she’s gonna miss me a lot, but she’s convinced that I am responsible enough for this coming up experience.

My father loves to repair old 4×4 jeeps, on vacations, he let me stay at our house with four of my close friends to help him in the garage but also to learn to drive through the country roads, I’ve been driving since I was thirteen, so I can teach my friends to drive because they don’t have the opportunities to learn to drive like I do.

I try to spend as much time as I can with my grandparents, fortunately, they’re all healthy and strong, they’re typically Spanish and they are always trying to teach me the old Spanish tradition which I also like.

I have been attending three different schools in three different places, so I also have a group of friends at each one. The plan in the country or in the city is very different, now I’m living in the city, so mainly I’m hanging out there, sometimes we go to a shopping center to see some clothes of the brands that we like if we have enough money, we buy something, after we go to some friends house to play some video games, listen to music and have fun.

During my life I’ve played a lot of sports, but mainly right now I’m playing karate, mountain bike and trial bike.

Some weekends I go to my uncle´s mountain ranch to work with horses and eagles and I get paid a little money for my own expenses.

If you are reading this, I want to thank you because I know my English is not perfect yet, although I have promised myself to optimize my time in order to learn this beautiful language perfectly.

Best,

Miguel, or Mike 🙂
