Dear future host family, thank you so much for reading my letter.
My name is Romy, I am 16 years old. I am German and live in one of the biggest cities of Germany.
I do a lot with my friends and family in my spare time, but I also love to read. My favorite book series is called “The Inheritance Games”. I also love reading books in English. I also like listening to music, mostly One Direction and their former band members, my favorite singer is Louis Tomlinson. I went to one of his concerts last year and I loved it. I also like to watch series or movies in English. My favorite movie is “Back to the Future” and my favorite series is “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. I’m actually more of a series person, but I love the Marvel universe. Just like the Harry Potter films, which I grew up with. My favorite food is sushi, but pizza is always good. I usually eat a vegetarian diet. I also love cooking and have learned a lot from my mother. I got my passion for swimming from my father. Since I started monofin swimming, I have been to regional competitions every year and for the last 3 years I have been to the German Youth Fin Swimming Championships.
I am a bit shy, but I open up quickly. I want to become a flight attendant later so that I can travel around the world. I used to want to be a writer because writing is very close to my heart. I have a lot of creative ideas and I like to put them into practice. My family consists of my two parents and my sister Nina, who is 2 years younger. We live together in a penthouse and have a river right in front of it where I love to go swimming. I had a cat but she died in 2021. I really like animals, but I have a lot of respect for big dogs as I’ve had bad experiences.
I do a lot with my family. We recently went to Formula E in Berlin because I’m a very big Formula 1 fan. I really enjoyed it. We do a lot together as a family, we go on vacations 2-3 times a year. This year we were in Sweden, we did a lot of things, e.g. museum, Abba, amusement park and much more. The household duties are clearly defined, I do the laundry and take out the waste, my sister is supposed to empty the dishwasher, but sometimes I do it for her. I also enjoy cooking for my family. My mother usually helps me with new recipes. I look after my room myself. Me and my sister have our own bathroom and we clean it regularly. I’m rather average at school, but that doesn’t bother me – there’s always room for improvement. I’m currently in year 10 and my favorite subject is art, I like being creative and I also like ethics because it’s extremely exciting. I attend the performing arts at my school – it’s a lot of fun. After school, I either meet up with friends or go to my swimming club. At the weekend, I spend time with my family or watch Formula 1 when it’s Race Week.
I decided to spend a year abroad in the USA because I am very fascinated by the country. I’ve been to the southern states when I was very young, so I don’t remember exactly, but my father worked in Alabama on a project. I’ve heard great stories and I want to experience it too. I’m looking forward to gain inside to a different school system, the one in Germany limits my abilities in my opinion. I’m also looking forward to the new experience with your family and other friends. I’m also looking forward to the different culture and am very open. I hope that my year abroad will give me a kind of loving second family and great new friends. I would also like to improve my English.
