Dear host parents!
Dear host family!
First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your hospitality in the future and I am looking forward to meeting you in person once I start my adventure. I’ve been living with my parents and my 9-year-old dog Henry for a while now, since my two brothers have already moved out to pursue their academic studies, though they still visit quite frequently and we keep in touch over various media channels.
Since I’m just a sophomore as of January 2024, I have a lot of spare time, which I like spending with friends and family, playing football as a Wide Receiver/Kicker, walking the dog (a lot) or listening to music (mostly EDM, but I’ll give virtually everything a try). One of my most cherished experiences with my friends was our skiing trip, hosted by our school, which has made me want to also try picking up skiing as a hobby again or maybe I just love snow and cold weather.
Although l know most of my friends personally from school or my football team, I also have a fair share of English-speaking friends, which I only know virtually, but have helped me vastly improve my English speaking and writing skills and learn about different lifestyles in countries like the USA. I wouldn’t call myself a native speaker, but I know my way around everyday conversation. However, I’m positive I can still learn a lot from my time in the USA both linguistically and socially.
I’ve thought about living abroad – specifically the USA – for a year for a while now, and that thought has been inspired by multiple factors, including the fun I have while playing football, the American culture, the stories my father told about his exchange year back in ’81 and also the fact that my brothers always wanted to spend a year away, but never got the chance to do so.
The things I’m most excited about are the American school system and experiencing the everyday high school life, getting to know new people and traditions, but of course also playing for the football team – however I’m also open to other sports that are offered at my
future high school. I can’t deny the fact that I’m a bit nervous, seeing that it’s going to be a completely unpredictable and different experience from my current life, however I’m sure that it will be a lot of fun as well, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the chance I’ve been given to fulfill my dream.
I can’t wait to spend a year with you.
Sincerely,
Martin
