LETTER FROM Mila

Mila

Dear future host family,

First of all, I want to thank you for welcoming me as a new member of your family and for the opportunity to embark on an amazing and exciting new chapter of my life, where I hope we can share many memories and experiences that will connect us.
You don’t know me yet, so I would like to introduce myself first. My name is Mila, and I am 15 years old. I’m living in Germany. My father is German and my mother is Polish. My hobbies that I am really into include reading, drawing, sketching and making jewelry such as bracelets or necklaces. My favorite book genres are fantasy and romance.

With my friends I like to do movie nights, listen to music, and bake cookies. With one of my closest friends, Ana, I started playing volleyball not so long ago. We are looking for a suitable club right now so we can practice our weaknesses and strengths. Until then, we are playing in one of our school clubs. This is one of the sports activities I really enjoy performing. I could imagine doing volleyball in my new high school as well.

Right now, I’m in my Freshman year and my favorite subject is art. I would say from me that I’m really creative and love to sketch and to draw. I looked through various subject offerings and noticed that in the United States, the options for art are much broader than in Germany. History is another of my favorite subjects. I like to learn about decisions made in the past and what it cost or what it changed. In Germany, American history came a bit short, so I would like to learn more about that in my new school. I really like to talk in English; I’m not perfect but this is one of the reasons, I want to do this exchange year.
My interests lay in Fashion from clothes, fabric to design and style. I also love cooking with my grandparents and If you’d like, I would like to cook some things from my culture German or Polish for you.

I love my family and have a close relationship with them. Likewise, I have a big family but my closest family members are my parents, my German and Polish grandparents, my uncles and aunts and my cousins Nadia and Matilda. We gather for various occasions like birthdays or holidays. I’m living together with my mom and dad in Berlin and we always have fun together, is it for Friday’s movie night with my mom or yearly bicycle tours with my dad, every year we are going skiing in the winter.
My parents love to travel so I saw many different cities and cultures already, we been to the United states twice. The first time in 2019 to Florida, the second time in 2023 to California. I think, still now, that this was one of my best vacations I’ve ever had. The people and the beauty of this country are great. That’s when I knew I wanted to do an exchange year in the USA. My parents run their own business. They have four fashion stores so on the weekend I’m helping them out by assisting my mom with her work and earning my own money for this opportunity.

I would say that I’m a really positive girl and not shy in communicating or making new contacts. I can laugh about every joke and have always a smile left. On the other hand, I can be a bit clumsy and emotional, though not so often. Mostly when I have a bad day, my mood can change, but it will take a bit for that to happen. For my exchange year, I want to step out of my comfort zone, learn new things, and meet new people. I also hope that I can be a new part of your family not just as an exchange student or an outsider. I think this opportunity can teach me many ways to look at something, many new and amazing perspectives.

I hope I have given you an insight into who I am, and I hope to get to know you as well! Thank you, and see you soon.

Yours,

Mila
