Host an International Intern or Trainee FAQs

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa category is a temporary, non-immigrant visa that allows qualified foreign nationals to study, train, or work in the U.S. as part of cultural exchange programs that promote the sharing of cross-cultural understanding and knowledge.

Interns and Trainees are not allowed to participate

• with a Staffing/Employment Agency
• in a position that involves more than 20 percent clerical work
• in any unskilled or casual labor position
• in positions that require or involve childcare or elder care
• in any kind of position that involves patient care or contact

The intern or trainee must be paid at least minimum wage. It is good to keep in mind that the visa regulations do not allow them to hold a second job while they are on the program. The stipend that the company provides will help them to cover their living expenses.

The ICES Internship and Professional Training programs are year-round programs. Participants can be available to arrive in the U.S. throughout the year according to the schedule that best fits the company’s request.

The DS-7002 is an official form also known as the T/IPP (Training/Internship Placement Plan). It is informally called the training plan. It outlines the plan the Host Company will follow for the Intern or Trainee. It includes the specific goals and objectives of the training/internship program; the knowledge, skills, or techniques to be learned; and the methods of evaluation and supervision. A prospective Intern or Trainee must have this completed form for their J-1 visa interview at the US Embassy or Consulate. ICES will review your training plan and give suggestions as needed.

You are not required to provide housing for the Intern or Trainee. Since they will be new to the area, it would be very helpful if you could advise them on where to look for affordable and safe housing. You may also want to mention a preferred short-term lodging such as an extended stay hotel in a safe area.

The J-1 visa that the Interns and Trainees have is a temporary visa that only allows them to be in the U.S. for their training program for the time period that is listed on their initial eligibility document with a specific start and end date. They must return to their home country within 30 days of that end date. All Host Companies must agree not to encourage or assist Interns or Trainees to remain in the U.S. outside the provisions of their original visas.

Cultural activities that expose international Interns and Trainees to American life are important parts of the J-1 Exchange Visitor program. It is important that your organization understands this principal and identifies at least one activity per month for your Intern or Trainee. Activities do not need to be expensive or complicated. Many of the best American cultural opportunities are simple and free.

Examples of cultural activities include:

• Sharing a meal with a co-worker or friend
• Taking part in company social activities
• Attending festivals in your community
• Volunteering at a local charity
• Attending a local sporting event
• Visiting a local museum or historic site
• Gathering with American friends for holiday celebrations
