LETTER FROM Irene

Irene

Hi!

My name is Irene and I am a 16-year-old Spanish student who would love to study in the USA. I live in an apartment with my family: my mom, my dad, and my sister. I love spending time with them, even though we sometimes have our ups and downs. But at the end of the day, they’re family, and that’s what really matters. We usually do a lot of activities together like going out for a walk, going to the movies, or riding our bikes; such as this summer when we traveled from Germany to Slovakia on our bikes. When we were younger, my dad, my sister, and I would often go to a soccer pitch and train together, although only my sister played soccer. Also, my mom would teach my sister and me how to cook and, as time goes by, I like it more and more.

I would describe myself as a friendly, cheerful, and easygoing person who is always trying to make other people smile. I’m also very kind and respectful, I’m always considerate of others and try to treat people the best way I can. My strengths are that I am very empathetic, as well as patient, and because of that, I always try to help others in any way I can. Also, I don’t know how to lie, so I’m very honest and will probably always tell the truth. For my weaknesses, I would say that I like everything to be perfect even though I am quite messy and that sometimes I can be very hard on myself. But without a doubt, my biggest weakness is that I tell the worst dad jokes.

I have a lot of interests, but some of my favorites include music, sports, and travel. I also enjoy painting and doing crafts, but above all of this, I love spending time with my friends and family. I love staying active, especially through sports like volleyball and swimming, or just by playing soccer with my friends, even though I’m not very good at it. I’m a huge soccer fan and love watching it. I also love staying indoors and just relaxing by myself, with friends, or with my family. I have no issues when it comes to food and I personally think that I’m not a picky eater. My favorite cuisines are Japanese and Spanish, and my favorite foods are sushi, Spanish omelet, and ham croquettes. I’m a person who loves to celebrate holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, although I would also love to experience a traditional Thanksgiving since it’s not celebrated here in Spain. In my family, we celebrate Christmas the most, and we have a lot of family traditions such as creating our own calendars with our birthdays and photos of us. Also, on New Year’s, we always have dinner with my cousins and we eat the 12 grapes while wearing something red, so that we will have luck each month of the year.

Through this experience, I hope to obtain more language and social skills and also to learn a whole new culture and to teach some of mine. I also hope to make a lot of new friends with whom I can have friendships that will last many years and to become a more independent person. I have always been interested in American football, baseball, and hockey, and would love to learn better how they work. I’ve been wanting to study in the USA for years now and always tried to convince my parents to move there but never succeeded. When I discovered that I could go study abroad, I knew I had to go, so after almost two years of convincing my parents, I’m proud to be writing this letter knowing that I might actually go study in the United States of America.

Thank you for considering hosting me, and I can’t wait to meet you and be part of your family!
