LETTER FROM Nicolo – Scholarship Recipient

Nicolo – Scholarship Recipient

Dear host family,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Nicolo, and I am a high school student who will have the honor of living with your family during my time in the United States. With great enthusiasm and curiosity, I am preparing for this experience, which will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity for personal growth and cultural exchange.

I come from Italy and current I living in a small town in the northwest of Italy surrounded by mountains and breathtaking landscapes including lakes. I still visit my hometown regularly, as my grandmother continues to live there. Every time I return, I feel a deep connection to the place where I spent the first six years of my life.

I live in a house with my family, made up of three people: me, my father and my mother. My father works in the nearest big city but often travels abroad because of his work (he is currently in China). My mother, Sara, also works in an office, but close to our city. I don’t see my father often because he’s often away, so we stay in touch via video calls. Sometimes, my mother and I visit him, allowing us to explore the places where he works. For example, last summer, I spent a month in Shanghai. When my father is at home, we go on vacation together and have a great relationship with both him and my mother.

My favorite sport is swimming. The first time I started swimming I was a few months old and from there I continued until today. In the United States I would like to continue swimming because I do it at a competitive level. I also like to go skiing with my friends, in fact I live near the Alps, so I can ski many times. I like the mountains in summer and winter, but I also like the sea. In the summer I go to the beach with my family or friends

I’m open to try new foods and I like to eat a variety of dishes, but generally not too spicy. I know how to make pasta, pizza and many Italian dishes and I would like to reproduce them with you. I eat almost everything and I don’t have problems eating. I really like meat, but I don’t mind fish either.

I’m a very curious person, so I like to discover new places (I like to travel) but also find out how something works, for example how the train or planes are made. I’m also a bit shy when I meet a new person, but later when I feel comfortable I become more relaxed and outgoing. I like to be in a group of friends and have fun all together.

I also like to build anything with wood or cardboard or any other material. When he was little I built a tree house with my dad and now I help him if we have to do some work around the house like cutting the hedge or whitewashing a room.

I also listen to some music. I don’t have a favorite musical genre but I listen to the music of the moment both Italian and English. Sometimes I listen to some old songs with my parents that we all know. I don’t play any musical instrument but I like to hear and see people playing the piano or the guitar or any other instrument.

I’m a little afraid of dogs because when I was little a big dog jumped on me and from that moment I’m a little afraid of them, but if the dog is calm I have no problems.

From this experience I hope above all to learn English well but also to discover new places and new cultures and in general life in the United States.

I want to thank you in advance for your warm hospitality and willingness to host me. I hope not to create problems and to let you know everything I know about my country and my cultures. I am truly looking forward to meeting you in person and beginning this exciting journey together. Thanks again, we’ll see each other at the beginning of school.
